SDC International Design Competition 2020 'Colour and the Universe'.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the SDC International Design Competition 2020, our annual flagship competition engaging with hundreds of students, universities and designers globally.

The competition helps the entrants develop their understanding of colour and the challenges around sustainability in the textile supply chain. The theme for 2020 is ‘Colour and the Universe'.

The full competition brief is now available on our website along with a range of free online educational resources on the SDC Colour Network.

We are delighted to announce that Archroma will continue their sponsorship for the 2020 competition. Once again students are tasked with referencing their chosen colour palette from The Color Atlas by Archroma®

Which features a library of over 4,000 colours and the facility to capture an image via smart phone and identify the closest Color Atlas shades.

'Colour and the Universe'

It is 50 years since man first landed on the moon but for millions of years we have been fascinated by the planets and the universe. Colour is fundamental to our understanding of the universe from the red planet Mars

to the pale gold of Saturn. From our own blue planet we talk about black holes, blue moons and blood moons. From the ancient Chinese five colour system to the Atomic design movement of the 1950s the universe has inspired design,

colour and textiles for centuries.

What does this mean for the designer? How do we see colour? Do we all see colour in the same way? Why do colours change according to light? What does this mean in terms of choice of colour and how this colour is communicated?

Launched in 2002, the SDC International Design Competition is open to undergraduate fashion and textile design students in 13 countries around the world. The focus for the competition is colour, with entrants challenged to demonstrate 'the creative, imaginative, technical and original use of colour in either fashion or textiles’.

The competition has acted as a launchpad into industry for some of the previous winners. The competition is accompanied by an online educational package and resources.
